These Smash Burger Bowls are everything you love about a burger (including the fries!) in a deconstructed bowl form. Easy and quick to make, these are a satisfying and delicious alternative to your standard burger in a bun. Everyone loves these!
Hello, hello!
It’s been a minute since I’ve shared a new recipe with you guys, and today’s is definitely worth the wait.
These Smash Burger Bowls are guaranteed to become a summer staple in your house!
I started making a version of these a couple months ago, and we eat them almost every single week. We love a good “bowl” in this house, and these are no exception.
I love these burger bowls because they’re easy and quick to throw together (a 30-minute recipe!), everyone can customize their own bowl the way they like, and they’re nutritionally well-balanced while being completely delicious and satisfying.
A triple threat kind of recipe!
Ingredients You Need for These Smash Burger Bowls:
- Avocado oil (or other neutral oil)
- Yellow onion
- Lean ground beef or ground turkey
- Seasonings: onion powder, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, garlic salt, and black pepper
- 1 package frozen French fries OR 16 oz baby potatoes, halved
- Shredded iceberg lettuce
- Diced cherry tomatoes
- Diced dill pickles
- Diced red onion
- Shredded cheddar cheese
- Plain Greek yogurt
- Mayo
- Ketchup
- Yellow mustard
- Cajun seasoning mix
- Dill pickle juice from the jar
So the idea here is pretty simple and certainly not revolutionary. We’re just doing deconstructed burgers in a bowl. The thing about this recipe, though, is that the components are each DELISH on their own, and when you combine them together, it really tastes like you are eating a burger from your favorite fast burger chain. Especially when it comes to the special burger sauce we all know and love.
How to Make These Smash Burger Bowls:
- Start with your potato base: we love frozen fries here, but roasted baby potatoes are also amazing. Prep them, season them, and crisp them in an air fryer. They make for the perfect base for these bowls.
- Cook your burger meat: we use ground turkey or beef for these burger bowls, and I absolutely love both versions. Cook the meat in a skillet with a little oil, onion, and seasonings until crumbled and cooked through.
- Make your sauce: whisk together Greek yogurt, mayo, ketchup, mustard, cajun seasoning, and a splash of pickle juice until the mixture is smooth and creamy. Season, to taste, with salt and pepper. I sometimes double the recipe because we love it so much.
- Assemble the bowls: layer the potatoes/fries in the bottom of your bowl and top with the cooked meat. Add cheese and any other toppings you prefer. We do shredded iceberg lettuce, diced tomatoes, red onion, diced pickles, and a healthy drizzle of the sauce. Enjoy while warm!
I like to make these with ground turkey, but we’ve made them with ground beef as well and it works great. Do whatever you prefer!
The meat sits atop a mound of delicious fries. I LOVE the convenience of frozen french fries, and I cook them in the oven or my air-fryer until they are crispy and delicious. You can also use roasted baby potatoes instead of the fries – again, we’ve done that many times and it’s fabulous.
The addition of potatoes to these bowls is what I think makes them. It takes “burger in a bowl” to a new, more satisfying level. I’m a proud Irish girl, and I’ve never met a potato I didn’t love.
Once you have your potatoes and meat in a bowl, you can top it however you prefer your burgers. We love a little shredded cheese (whatever kind you like), shredded iceberg, chopped cherry tomatoes, lots of pickles, some red onion, and a healthy drizzle of the special sauce.
PLEASE do not skip the sauce – it MAKES these burger bowls sing.
The sauce is easy to make and tastes like the classic burger sauce we know from chain restaurants and fast food places. It’s a creamy and tangy condiment that I could literally eat on anything. SO GOOD.

Description
These Smash Burger Bowls are everything you love about a burger (including the fries!) in a deconstructed bowl form. Easy and quick to make, these are a satisfying and delicious alternative to your standard burger in a bun. Everyone loves these!
Ingredients
- 1 (20-oz) package frozen French fries OR 16 oz baby potatoes, halved (see below for details)
For the Meat:
- 2 teaspoons avocado oil
- 1 medium yellow onion, diced
- 1 lb lean ground beef or turkey
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon garlic salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
For the Smash Sauce:
- 2 tablespoons plain Greek yogurt
- 2 tablespoons mayo
- 2 tablespoons ketchup
- 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
- 1/4 teaspoon cajun seasoning mix
- A few tablespoons of dill pickle juice from the jar
For the Bowls:
- 6 cups shredded iceberg lettuce
- 1 1/2 cups halved cherry tomatoes
- 1 cup diced dill pickles
- 1/2 cup diced red onion
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Instructions
Start by Making the Potato Base:
To Make These Bowls with Frozen Fries:
- Add the fries to the basket of your airfryer (or in an even layer on a baking sheet), season with salt and pepper, and bake/airfry according to the package directions.
To Make These Bowls with Baby Potatoes:
- Halve the potatoes and spread them in an even layer in your airfryer (or on a baking sheet). Season with a drizzle of oil, salt, and pepper. Transfer to the airfryer and cook for 15 minutes at 400°F, shaking the pan halfway through. If making in the oven, roast them at 400°F for 20-25 minutes or until they are golden brown and crisp.
For the Meat:
- While the potatoes are cooking, make the meat mixture by heating a large skillet over medium heat and adding the oil. Once hot, add the diced yellow onion and cook for a couple minutes.
- Add in the beef or turkey, breaking it up with a spoon or spatula, and the seasonings.
- Cook, stirring frequently, for about 5-7 minutes or until the meat is cooked through and crumbled.
For the Smash Sauce:
- Whisk together the yogurt, mayo, ketchup, mustard, and cajun seasoning.
- Thin the mixture with a tablespoon or two of dill pickle juice from the jar. Season, to taste, with salt and pepper. We like the sauce both tangy and easy to drizzle, so I sometimes add up to ¼ cup of pickle juice. Adjust the sauce to your preferences.
Assemble the Bowls:
- Add potatoes or fries to each serving bowl and then top with the cooked meat. Add shredded cheese to each bowl (optional but recommended).
- Top each bowl with desired toppings. We love iceberg lettuce, diced tomatoes, red onion, pickles and a healthy drizzle of the smash sauce. Enjoy while warm.
