Bourbon Cookie Butter Hot Chocolate

Boy oh boy. I have an epic cup of cozy for you today!

This Bourbon Cookie Butter Hot Chocolate is a mouthful to say but a mighty enjoyable mouthful at that.

Talk about decadence! This grown-up treat is one for the books. We’ve got rich, creamy, deeply dark hot chocolate spiced with cinnamon and whipped together with cookie butter. As if that wasn’t enough, we’re spiking the situation with some bourbon.

The flavors were made for one another! Maple syrup, cinnamon, chocolate, cookie butter, and bourbon. Yes, yes, and YES!

Homemade hot chocolate from scratch is SO easy to make, and you likely have the ingredients on hand already. It takes minutes to whip up and tastes worlds better than any powdered version from the store.

Pinky promise.

The best part? You can customize it a million different ways.

You can use your favorite kind of chocolate, make it as sweet as you prefer, and add in fun and funky flavors like we’re doing today.

It’s as fun as it is delicious.

Ingredients You Need for This Bourbon Cookie Butter Hot Chocolate:

  • Unsweetened cocoa powder (this is my favorite)
  • Maple syrup
  • Water
  • Kosher salt
  • Cinnamon
  • Milk (dairy, oat, almond – whatever you prefer)
  • Semisweet or bittersweet chocolate
  • Creamy cookie butter (recommended: Biscoff or Trader Joe’s)
  • Vanilla extract
  • Bourbon
  • Optional Garnishes: marshmallows, biscoff cookies (or graham crackers), whipped cream, additional cookie butter, or flaky sea salt

How to Make This Bourbon Cookie Butter Hot Chocolate:

  • Place the cocoa powder, maple syrup, water, salt, and cinnamon in a large saucepan.
  • Whisk everything together and then set the pan over medium heat. Whisk until smooth and starting to bubble around the edges.
  • Whisk in the milk, chocolate, and cookie butter and heat until the chocolate and cookie butter are completely melted and everything is nice and hot.
  • Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the vanilla and the bourbon (the bourbon is optional – simply omit to skip the alcohol. Alternatively, you can add the bourbon to individual servings).

FAQs:

Do I need to use the bourbon in this cookie butter hot chocolate?

  • Nope! Feel free to omit the alcohol all together if you plan on serving this to people who cannot/choose not to have alcohol. It will still be epic sans booze. Alternatively, you can add the bourbon to individual servings and not the entire batch.
  • If you want to swap in a different liquor, any whiskey or dark rum would be delicious here.

What kind of chocolate should I use?

  • We are using chocolate in two forms for this recipe: cocoa powder and chopped chocolate. I highly recommend using a rich, less sweet chocolate here – semisweet or bittersweet – anything else will be way too sweet with the maple syrup and cookie butter.
  • The cocoa powder can be any kind but unsweetened is a must. This is my favorite cocoa powder, for both baking and hot chocolate drinks like this one. It’s richly chocolatey without being bitter.

Can I make this ahead?

  • While this hot chocolate is best enjoyed right after it’s prepared, you can make this ahead and gently reheat it on the stove over low heat when you are ready to enjoy it. If the hot chocolate cools, it may separate. This is fine! Just whisk vigorously over low heat until it mixes again.

Optional Garnishes:

  • Marshmallows
  • Biscoff cookies

Sensational variation on one of our favorite ways of winding down the night. We had this last night in bed, along with a few Walker’s shortbread cookies. Got lucky, and no spilling :). Thank you Molly, this is definitely a thing! About to post, but just had a thought….I’m guessing that you could come up with a home made version of Nutella that would beat out the commercial version. This is my holiday wish!
