Elderflower & Honey Margaritas

Hi Friends! Happy May!

How many Justin Timberlake “It’s gonna be me/May?” memes have you seen so far today? I still think it’s hilarious every time I see it.

Elderflower & Honey Margaritas

Not only is today the start of May, one of the best months of the year in terms of weather and the unofficial kickoff to summer, but this week is Margarita Week! Kate over at Hola Jalapeño hosts this shindig each year, and I am obsessed. This girl right here loves her some margs. In fact, they are my preferred drink most months of the year. The creativity of all the margs being shared this week is insane – you guys have to check it out!

Plus! The timing is absolute perfection given that Cinco de Mayo is this weekend. Oh! And the Kentucky Derby! If you’re not a bourbon person (samesies), then swap out those mint juleps for some margaritas! I don’t think people will complain.

Elderflower & Honey Margaritas

Especially if you serve up some of these!

My contribution this year is a light and florally take on a margarita. I’m calling these elderflower and honey margs. We’ve got tequila. Duh. For these, I opted for a silver tequila, specifically one that was lime flavored. I love this stuff. It’s great when you’re low on limes and still craving that classic margarita flavor. It just re-emphasizes the limey goodness. Feel free to swap in whatever tequila you like here!

Elderflower & Honey Margaritas

Next is some elderflower liqueur. You guys probably have figured out by now just how obsessed with this stuff I am. I use it in cocktails ALL THE TIME. I’ve even made ice cream with it! It is so delicious in just about any gin or vodka cocktail. And now! Tequila cocktails!

Elderflower & Honey Margaritas

Next comes lots of fresh citrus. I love a combo of lime and orange here. The orange helps sweeten things up a bit and it pairs beautifully with the elderflower (also, if you’re out of orange liqueur, just swap in an extra squeeze of the fresh orange juice. It does the trick!).

Elderflower & Honey Margaritas

THEN! I added in a drizzle of honey in lieu of simple syrup. I like coming up with cocktails that don’t always require you to make a simple syrup, because let’s be honest, it’s sooo much easier when you can skip that part. I chose honey here because it’s floral. You probably guessed that. It just works SO WELL here. I plan on sweetening many more a cocktail with honey in the future.

Add in a splash of orange liqueur and give everything a shake with lots of ice and you’re good to go.

Elderflower & Honey Margaritas

I always serve margaritas with a salt rim, but lately, I’ve been loving the sugar-salt rim combo. It still gives you that saltiness that I think all margs should have, but it’s not quite as aggressive. Love. It.

These margs are an awesome drink to serve with food, too. You know how some cocktails are meant to be enjoyed alone, pre-dinner? Well, THESE are so light and fresh, they work really well with savory, more aggressive flavors. Like nachos! Or chilaquiles! Enchiladas! And definitely tacos!

Elderflower & Honey Margaritas

So, basically, these are meant to be this upcoming Cinco de Mayo weekend. I know I’ll be making a big batch, for sure.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 oz lime-flavored silver tequila (or any tequila you prefer)
  • 2 oz elderflower liqueur (St. Germaine is my fave)
  • 1 oz orange liqueur
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • Juice of 2 limes
  • Juice of ½ an orange
  • Ice
  • Salt and/or sugar, for rimming the glasses
  • Additional lime and orange slices, for garnish

Instructions

  1. To a shaker filled with ice, add the tequila, elderflower liqueur, orange liqueur, and citrus juices.
  2. Shake vigorously for 30 seconds to thoroughly mix and chill the ingredients.
  3. Rim your serving glasses with salt, sugar, or a mix of the two. Fill them with ice.
  4. Divide the mixture between the two glasses, garnish with citrus slices, and serve immediately.

NOTE:

  1. I find this mixture to be plenty sweet, but feel free to add more honey, to taste. You can also swap the honey for simple syrup or agave nectar.
